WHATEVER IT TAKES
There's a particular kind of person who can tell you which airport terminal has the shortest security line, which rental car counter closes at midnight, and which hotel in Cleveland has an elevator that makes a noise you should probably report to someone.
They didn't learn these things on vacation.
Monday starts in one city. Tuesday belongs to another. By Wednesday, there's a rental car parked outside a hotel whose name sounds vaguely familiar, a suitcase that hasn't been completely unpacked in three weeks, and a dinner reservation for one at a restaurant selected entirely because it's within walking distance.
Welcome to healthcare insurance sales.
The territory looks manageable on a map. A few cities, some connecting highways, perhaps an airport or two. On paper, it's practically a leisurely drive through the American landscape.
In practice, it's a 5:40 a.m. departure, a presentation moved from ten to eleven, a prospective client who needs to reschedule, and a conference room in a building with three entrances, none of which appear to be the correct one.
There are meetings with business owners who know every employee by name. Human resources directors balancing budgets against the very real needs of the people they represent. Families trying to understand what their coverage actually means. And people asking perfectly reasonable questions about an industry that has spent decades making simple answers surprisingly difficult.
Someone has to explain the networks. The premiums. The deductibles. The difference between what a plan costs and what it might save. Someone has to remember the details, return the calls, follow up on the unanswered questions, and occasionally drive another ninety miles because a conversation is worth having in person.
And somewhere along the way, the salesperson becomes an expert in things that have absolutely nothing to do with insurance. Interstate exits. Hotel blackout curtains. Airport weather patterns. The exact moment a rental car begins making a sound it wasn't making when you picked it up.
There are easier ways to earn a living. Ways that involve sleeping in the same bed every night and knowing what's in the refrigerator.
But there's something to be said for the people who keep showing up. Who remember the client's daughter's name. Who answer the call after the paperwork is signed. Who understand that behind every enrollment form is an actual person who may someday need that coverage very badly.
The miles accumulate. The boarding passes disappear. The hotel rooms become indistinguishable. And eventually, even the most enthusiastic traveler begins to appreciate the extraordinary luxury of being home on a Thursday night.
But tomorrow there's another appointment. Another introduction. Another opportunity to make something complicated a little easier for somebody else.
So the suitcase gets packed.
WHATEVER IT TAKES.
