Before money moved at the speed of light, it moved through a room.

A very large room.

With raised floors, fluorescent lighting, enormous magnetic tape reels, and an air-conditioning system powerful enough to preserve a side of beef.

Somewhere inside that room, a machine was processing a transfer.

And somewhere beside that machine stood Stanley.

Stanley wore a short-sleeved shirt, carried three pens in his breast pocket, and understood a computer system that nobody else in the building particularly wanted to understand.

The transfer had been requested at 9:14 that morning.

There were forms. There were authorization codes. There was a telephone conversation with someone in Cleveland who insisted the numbers were correct.

Stanley checked them anyway.

Then the instructions went into the machine.

Magnetic reels began turning. Indicator lights blinked. A printer somewhere in the back started producing an extraordinary quantity of paper.

And the money began its journey.

Not physically, of course.

Nobody was carrying a suitcase across the room.

Although, given the amount involved, someone from management had come downstairs to watch.

He stood with his hands behind his back, looking thoughtfully at a machine whose purpose he could not have explained under oath.

Stanley ignored him.

At 10:47, the printer stopped.

Stanley examined the final line.

Everything reconciled.

He initialed the report, placed it in the appropriate tray, and went to lunch.

Three floors upstairs, somebody announced that the transfer had been completed successfully.

There was considerable satisfaction.

Nobody mentioned Stanley.
