There was a time when a good salesman could fit his entire livelihood into a leather briefcase. A few brochures, a stack of applications, a calculator, two reliable pens, and the unshakable conviction that everyone he met was about to become a customer.

Health insurance sales required a particular kind of preparation. Individual plans, family plans, group coverage, provider networks, enrollment deadlines, deductibles, copayments, and the occasional question about a specialist in a town three counties away. The answers were all in there somewhere, carefully organized behind little colored tabs.

There were comparison charts for people who liked numbers. Benefits summaries for people who didn't. Enrollment forms for people who were ready. And additional enrollment forms for people who had somehow managed to fill out the first ones incorrectly.

Somewhere between explaining the difference between a deductible and an out-of-pocket maximum, locating a participating dermatologist, and assuring a prospective client that yes, dental was a separate conversation, the salesman became something more than a salesman.

He became a translator. A researcher. A problem solver. Occasionally a marriage counselor when two people discovered they had very different opinions about monthly premiums.

And when the meeting was over, everything went back into the case. Every folder in its place. Every pen accounted for. The next appointment was already on the calendar.

Because the product was complicated, the decisions were personal, and the people sitting across the table deserved someone who knew what they were talking about.

Some things have changed. The leather briefcase became a laptop. The brochures became PDFs. The calculator became an app. But the preparation, the persistence, and the responsibility of helping someone make an important decision haven't gone anywhere.
