RED MOON

Somewhere over the Atlantic, the moon has turned red.

Not the ordinary pale yellow of a moon rising over the rooftops. Not the silver-white moon that follows people home from dinner.

This one is enormous.

Deep red, hanging above the clouds like something from a science fiction film made in 1968.

In seat 22A, a woman has stopped watching her movie.

She's been awake for nineteen hours. Her shoes are somewhere beneath the seat in front of her. The man beside her has been asleep since takeoff, with the enviable commitment of someone who can apparently fall unconscious in any position.

She was supposed to be sleeping too.

Instead, she's looking out the window.

Below the wing is an ocean she cannot see. Above it, a sky so dark that the stars seem almost close enough to touch.

And there is the moon.

Red.

For a moment, she wonders whether something extraordinary is happening.

Perhaps an eclipse. Perhaps some peculiar trick of the atmosphere. Perhaps the universe has simply decided to put on a show for the handful of people still awake on Flight 218.

She considers waking the man beside her.

She decides against it.

Some things are better experienced without an audience.

Up in the cockpit, the pilots have been watching the night unfold for hours. The instruments glow softly. The radios crackle occasionally. Somewhere far below, ships are crossing the ocean, carrying their own small collections of people toward distant ports.

There is something peculiar about flying through the night.

Time becomes difficult to measure. Dinner happens when it should be breakfast. Breakfast arrives when the body is quite certain it ought to be asleep. Cities disappear beneath the clouds, and the world becomes an arrangement of distant lights, invisible borders, and unfamiliar constellations.

For the crews who make these journeys regularly, the night sky becomes part of the workplace.

They know the long hours over water. The quiet exchanges between colleagues. The strange intimacy of a cabin full of sleeping strangers. The particular beauty of a sunrise that arrives several time zones before anyone is ready for it.

And sometimes, they look out and see something that reminds them why flying never becomes entirely ordinary.

Back in seat 22A, the woman reaches for her phone.

She takes a photograph.

It is terrible.

The window reflects her face. The wing is blurry. The moon, which moments ago seemed large enough to fill the sky, has become a small red dot floating in a sea of black.

She tries again.

Worse.

Eventually, she puts the phone away.

Outside, the moon continues its slow passage across the sky, entirely unconcerned with whether anyone has managed to capture it.

She watches until her eyes begin to close.

When she wakes, the cabin lights are on. Breakfast is being served. A pale strip of daylight has appeared along the horizon.

The moon is gone.

She has no photograph worth keeping.

But she remembers exactly what it looked like.

RED MOON celebrates the extraordinary things that sometimes appear beyond an airplane window, when the world is quiet, the journey is long, and the sky decides to remind us how little of it we ordinarily see.

An original BIENTEVEO design for night travelers, aviation romantics, and the people who know that some of the most remarkable moments of a journey happen while everyone else is asleep.
