PLEASE INITIAL HERE
There are many ways to measure the importance of a financial transaction.
The amount of money involved is one.
The number of places you're required to sign is another.
A simple transaction might require a signature.
A complicated transaction requires signatures, initials, identification, verification, acknowledgment, and a small stack of documents explaining precisely what you've just acknowledged.
Somewhere in that stack, usually on page fourteen, is a little box.
Please initial here.
It's a modest request.
Three letters, perhaps two. A tiny personal mark confirming that you've seen something, read something, agreed to something, or at the very least been presented with the opportunity to do so.
Banking has a long and distinguished relationship with paperwork.
Before electronic signatures and digital agreements, financial institutions operated entire departments dedicated to the movement, verification, filing, retrieval, and preservation of documents.
There were carbon copies, embossed seals, rubber stamps, numbered forms, and cabinets containing enough paper to alter the structural calculations of the building.
There were people who could locate a document from 1973 in less time than it takes most people to find their car keys.
These people were invaluable.
They were also somewhat suspicious of anyone who borrowed a file without signing it out.
Today, the paperwork has largely migrated to screens.
The forms are digital. The signatures are electronic. The filing cabinets have become databases.
But the underlying principle remains.
Someone must agree to the terms.
And someone else must be able to prove that they did.
At a bank, a loan officer is sitting across from a customer who has just purchased his first commercial property.
It's a substantial moment.
The customer has spent years building his business, saving money, negotiating contracts, and imagining what it would feel like to own the building instead of sending rent to somebody else.
Now the documents are on the desk.
The loan officer turns a page.
"Please initial here."
The customer initials.
Another page.
"And here."
He initials again.
Then another.
By page seventeen, his initials have developed a personality of their own.
By page twenty-three, they resemble the signature of a man attempting to escape from a moving vehicle.
The loan officer remains composed.
She has guided hundreds of people through this process.
She knows which pages matter most, which questions are coming, and exactly when to offer a little reassurance.
She also knows that the customer will almost certainly ask whether he's finished approximately six pages before he actually is.
He does.
She smiles.
"Almost."
There is something quietly extraordinary about these administrative rituals.
A few strokes of ink can authorize a mortgage, establish a business partnership, release a payment, transfer ownership, or commit two parties to an agreement that will last for decades.
The mark itself may be tiny.
The consequences rarely are.
And behind every document is someone whose job is to make sure the details are correct, the obligations are understood, and nothing important has been overlooked.
Eventually, the loan officer reaches the final page.
The customer signs his name.
She congratulates him.
He looks at the enormous stack of documents.
"That's it?" he asks.
"That's it."
He sits back, relieved.
Then she slides one final sheet across the desk.
"I just need you to initial one correction."
PLEASE INITIAL HERE celebrates the bankers, loan officers, financial administrators, compliance professionals, and operations specialists who understand that the smallest mark on a document can carry an enormous amount of responsibility.
An original BIENTEVEO design for the people who know exactly where to sign, where to initial, and why the difference matters.
