LET ME CHECK

There are three words capable of bringing an entire banking transaction to a standstill.

Let me check.

They are delivered calmly. Professionally. Often with a reassuring smile.

And then somebody turns toward a computer.

In the early days, that computer occupied a room of its own. It had enormous cabinets, blinking lights, magnetic tape, and a temperature-controlled environment that was considerably more comfortable than the offices of the people who worked there.

It also had opinions.

Usually expressed on green screens in a language that required several years of training and a remarkable tolerance for abbreviations.

Somewhere in the building, a customer wanted to know why a deposit hadn't appeared.

Somewhere else, a branch manager wanted to know why a transfer had appeared twice.

And in the computer room, a technician named Walter was studying a printout approximately the length of a bowling alley.

Walter had been asked to check something.

He was checking.

Walter understood that the financial system was built on trust, accuracy, and machines that occasionally needed to be turned off and turned back on.

He also understood that a blinking green light was not necessarily good news.

Neither was a blinking red light.

And the absence of blinking lights was a situation best discussed with someone considerably higher up the organizational chart.

At 10:42, a supervisor appeared in the doorway.

“Any progress?”

Walter looked at the printout.

“Let me check.”

It was a perfectly reasonable answer.

It was also the answer he had given at 9:15.

By lunchtime, three departments were involved, two managers had developed headaches, and someone from accounting had suggested that perhaps the money was simply in the wrong column.

Walter found the problem at 2:17.

A single misplaced character.

One character in several thousand lines of instructions.

The system resumed operations. The transfer appeared. The customer was satisfied.

The branch manager congratulated everyone on a job well done.

Walter returned to his desk, where another message was waiting.

Could he check one more thing?

Of course he could.
