INSUFFICIENT FUNDS
There is a particular kind of optimism involved in handing over a credit card when you are not entirely certain what will happen next.
It is the optimism of musicians, artists, entrepreneurs, and people who have recently returned from Las Vegas.
Somewhere in 1978, a drummer named Eddie is standing at the counter of a music shop, attempting to purchase a new cymbal.
The old one cracked during a performance on Saturday night. It was a particularly enthusiastic performance, although the audience consisted of seventeen people, three of whom were related to the bass player.
Eddie needs the cymbal.
He also needs to pay his rent.
These two requirements have not yet been properly introduced to one another.
Behind the counter, a young man with exceptionally long hair runs Eddie's card through a mechanical imprinter.
There is a satisfying clunk.
There is paperwork.
There is hope.
And then, eventually, there is a telephone call.
At the other end of the line is a woman named Margaret, who works in the authorization department of a bank and has already spent the morning explaining to six different people that their available balance is not a matter of personal interpretation.
Margaret is very good at her job.
She has a pencil behind her ear, a cardigan over her shoulders, and absolutely no interest in the artistic significance of Eddie's cymbal.
She has the numbers.
The numbers are not encouraging.
Eddie attempts to explain that his band is about to become extremely successful.
Margaret has heard this before.
She has also heard about inheritances, business opportunities, temporary cash-flow problems, and a horse named Lucky.
She wishes them all the very best.
But the answer remains the same.
There is something almost democratic about insufficient funds. It makes no distinction between the famous and the forgotten, the extravagant and the merely disorganized.
It has declined rock stars, real estate developers, newlyweds, and people buying groceries on a Thursday afternoon.
It has interrupted honeymoons.
It has ended dinner parties.
It has occasionally saved people from themselves.
And for the professionals who work in banking, it is one of those phrases that can turn an otherwise ordinary afternoon into a very long conversation.
Because money has an inconvenient habit of insisting on arithmetic.
Even when the music is excellent.
INSUFFICIENT FUNDS celebrates the beautiful collision between ambition and available balance—and the banking professionals who must occasionally deliver the least popular news in the room.
An original BIENTEVEO design for bankers, financial professionals, musicians with expensive tastes, and anyone who has ever believed that tomorrow's money ought to be available today.
