HOLDING PATTERN
The aircraft was supposed to land seventeen minutes ago.
Instead, it has just passed over the same little town for the third time.
Down below, a man is mowing his lawn. A woman is hanging out the washing. A dog is barking at something that may or may not be an airplane.
None of them has any idea that two hundred people are circling overhead, waiting for permission to finish their journey.
Welcome to the holding pattern.
In aviation, a holding pattern is a carefully defined maneuver that allows an aircraft to remain within a designated area of airspace while awaiting further clearance. It isn't wandering around. It isn't improvisation. There are prescribed turns, headings, altitudes, timing requirements, and procedures designed to keep aircraft safely separated.
To the people operating the system, it is a precise and thoroughly understood arrangement.
To the gentleman in seat 18C, it looks suspiciously like they're lost.
He has been watching the little airplane on the seatback screen. It has made a loop. Then another loop. Now it appears to be considering a third.
He presses the call button.
The flight attendant arrives.
He points to the screen.
"Are we going in circles?"
She explains that air traffic control has instructed the aircraft to hold because of congestion at the destination airport.
He studies the map again.
"But we're right there."
Indeed they are.
Unfortunately, so are fourteen other airplanes.
In the cockpit, the pilots are monitoring fuel, weather, traffic information, and the clearance they've received. They know how long they can remain in the hold, what alternatives are available, and when a diversion might become necessary.
On the ground, controllers are coordinating arrivals, managing separation, and fitting aircraft into a constantly changing sequence. A runway may be temporarily unavailable. Weather may have reduced the arrival rate. An earlier delay may have produced a queue that now stretches across several states.
Everybody has somewhere to be.
Not everybody can be there at once.
There is an extraordinary amount of discipline involved in waiting properly.
The pilots must remain attentive. The controllers must keep the traffic organized. The airline operations team must anticipate what happens if the delay continues. Flight attendants must keep the cabin comfortable while answering questions for which the most accurate response is occasionally, "We don't know yet."
And all of it takes place inside a system designed to make the eventual arrival as uneventful as possible.
Our passenger has now discovered that the little airplane on his screen is tracing something resembling a racetrack.
He shows his wife.
She has been reading a novel and would prefer to continue.
"Look," he says. "We're doing it again."
She turns a page.
Eventually, the radio crackles in the cockpit.
The aircraft receives clearance to leave the hold and continue its approach.
The pilots begin their descent. The runway appears ahead. The landing is smooth, the taxi uneventful, and the passengers collect their belongings with the usual determination to stand up before anyone can possibly go anywhere.
At the gate, the gentleman from 18C announces that they nearly had to land somewhere else.
His wife says nothing.
She's finished her book.
HOLDING PATTERN celebrates the pilots, air traffic controllers, dispatchers, flight attendants, and aviation operations professionals who understand that waiting is not the absence of progress. Sometimes it's the most carefully managed part of the entire journey.
An original BIENTEVEO design for the people who know that going around in circles can be a perfectly sensible plan, provided everybody agrees on the altitude.
