FREEDOM OF THE PRESS
It's two in the morning, and somebody is still asking questions.
A reporter is sitting in a parked car outside city hall. An editor has just sent a headline back for the seventh time. Somewhere in a newsroom, a young journalist is discovering that the most important sentence in a story is the one nobody wanted her to write.
And the presses are supposed to start at four.
The First Amendment protects freedom of the press, recognizing that a free society depends on the ability to investigate, publish, criticize, and report without government censorship.
It's an extraordinary arrangement.
The government is expected to tolerate newspapers that question its decisions, journalists who investigate its conduct, and editorial writers who occasionally suggest that the people running things have absolutely no idea what they're doing.
Sometimes in considerably less polite language.
For generations, reporters have followed paper trails through courthouse basements, knocked on doors nobody wanted opened, and spent entire afternoons waiting for someone to return a telephone call.
They've covered wars, exposed corruption, documented injustice, and written thousands of stories about municipal budgets that deserved far more attention than they received.
They've also corrected misspelled names, chased unreliable sources, and learned that the phrase "off the record" is considerably more complicated than most people imagine.
FREEDOM OF THE PRESS celebrates the constitutional principle that the people have a right to a press free from government control, even when its reporting is inconvenient, uncomfortable, or deeply unpopular.
It doesn't guarantee that every story will be accurate. It doesn't excuse defamation or eliminate the legal responsibilities that accompany publication.
And it certainly doesn't guarantee that anyone will like the headline.
But it protects the independence necessary to keep asking questions.
Especially the ones nobody wants to answer.
Of course, the editor still wants twelve words cut from the opening paragraph.
And the presses are waiting.
An original BIENTEVEO design for the journalists, editors, publishers, and defenders of the First Amendment who understand that a free press isn't always comfortable company. That's rather the point.
