A Note on the Shapeshifter

The octopus may be one of the closest things nature has produced to a magician.

Three hearts. Blue blood. Eight extraordinarily sensitive arms. A nervous system so unusual that much of its processing happens throughout the body rather than only in the brain.

But the real magic is transformation.

An octopus can change its appearance with astonishing speed, matching color, pattern, and even the apparent texture of its surroundings. What looks like a smooth animal one moment can become mottled, rough, pale, dark, striped, spotted, almost stone-like the next.

It is camouflage, certainly.
